About Us
Looking for a stylish Edinburgh hotel in the city centre with real character and heritage? Welcome to The Place Hotel, a four-star boutique hotel located on York Place, one of Edinburgh's most iconic Georgian streets.
Our hotel is housed within three beautifully restored 18th-century townhouses, part of the city's famous New Town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest and best-preserved examples of urban planning in Europe.
York Place, built between 1793 and 1804, was among the earliest streets in this visionary development designed to expand Edinburgh beyond its crowded Old Town.
The buildings themselves are steeped in architectural and cultural significance. The façade features classic Georgian design elements, including V-jointed rustication at the principal floor, corniced and architraved sash windows, and a fluted Ionic pilastered doorway, added in 1884 by the noted Scottish architect Hippolyte J. Blanc.
At the rear, an extension was added in 1934 by the respected firm Leadbetter, Fairley and Reid, further shaping the evolution of the property. Cast-iron railings with spear-headed and urn finials still frame the stone steps that once welcomed 19th-century residents and visitors.
A Notable Resident
Among those residents was Dr James Scarth Combe (1796–1883), a distinguished surgeon, researcher, and President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr Combe was the first to accurately describe pernicious anaemia and its connection to atrophic gastritis, predating Thomas Addison's findings by nearly three decades. He lived at 36 York Place — now part of The Place Hotel — during a time when this address was at the heart of Edinburgh's medical and intellectual life.
